Navigating the DOT Inspection Process

DOT inspection is the process of ensuring that your commercial vehicle is safe to operate on public roads. There are a number of vehicles that require an annual DOT inspection, including:

  • Commercial motor vehicles that weigh over 10,000 pounds
  • Vehicles transporting hazardous materials
  • Vehicles that transport more than 16 passengers
  • Passenger & School buses

The term commercial motor vehicle includes each vehicle in a combination vehicle. For example, for a tractor semitrailer, full trailer combination, the tractor, semitrailer, and the full trailer (including the converter dolly if so equipped) must each be inspected.

When performing their annual safety checks, inspectors will examine everything from lights and tires to brakes and steering systems--they'll also make sure there aren't any cracks in windows or windshields and check under hoods for leaks while inspecting fluids levels too! This is why we thought of sharing a few useful tips, which you can follow to get through a DOT inspection with flying colors.

Common Violations Found During DOT Inspections

Driver violations

These are the most common reasons a heavy-duty truck will fail a DOT inspection. For example, if you're driving with a suspended license or have no proof of insurance, your heavy-duty truck will likely be taken out of service immediately.

Administrative violations

These are less serious than driver violations but still important to keep in mind when preparing for your DOT inspection. You might need to update your registration or inspection stickers before visiting the DMV--or even get new ones all together if they've expired!

Consequences of Failing a DOT Inspection
